When AVID does not involve the participation of a sufficient number of administrators and teacher leaders, it becomes a peripheral project, meeting the needs of a small group of students. However, when AVID is applied as a schoolwide program, its positive influence impacts all students. To ensure the success of schoolwide AVID implementation, the following beliefs must be present:
- All students deserve the opportunity to experience academic rigor
- Instruction impacts student achievement, so what happens in the classroom is fundamental to student academic success
- Ongoing professional development improves and supports effective instruction
- Teachers function as a collaborative learning community
- Data drives school improvement decisions
- All members of the school are accountable for its successes and failures
- Support structures help students and teachers excel
- The school culture sets college attendance as a goal for all students
